Criteria for failure of spontaneous breathing trial

Anxiety

Diaphoresis

Greater than 20 to 25 percent increase in heart rate and/or blood pressure

Increased use of accessory muscles and dyspnea

Respiratory rate > 35 breaths/minute

S_pO₂ < 90 percent or greater than 5 percent decrease from baseline

S_pO₂, oxygen saturation.
