Timeline for study. Following documentation of severe bronchospasm, lungs were randomized to receive either a helium-oxygen gas mixture (heliox) or a nitrogen-oxygen gas mixture (nitrox). The order in which each lung received pulmonary function tests (PFTs) was also randomized.
