(a) a 4-day-old, 26-week gestation infant, and (b) a 2-day old, term infant. In the planes of the superimposed vertical white lines,
signal intensity is graphed to the left of the images and shows that the preterm infant
has a gravity-dependent increase in signal intensity as compared with the homogeneous
pattern in the term infant. The arrow in panel a points to an area of dependent thickened
