Image analysis measurement of alveolar stability. In vivo photomicrographs of the same microscopic field at peak inspiration (top panel) and end expiration (bottom panel). Individual alveoli were outlined and the area at peak inspiration (I) and end expiration (E) was measured using image analysis software.
